How much clothing did they *actually* have back then?
It's one of the most common questions, but also one of the most complex. The mythology surrounding our closet is difficult to prove or disprove, because every person is different. Our best bet is to take a look at the multitude of information available to piece together a story. From budgets to government surveys to fashion magazines, how much clothing (and how much you should spend on it) has been a hot topic for decades.

A Colorful History of Rainbow Fashion
Переглядів 49 тис.21 день тому
Ever since we managed bright and colorful dyes centuries ago, we've been combining them in as many ways as possible! It's no surprise that the rainbow has been an inspirational part of fashion for just as long. Whether it's embroidered arches or multicolor ombre, it doesn't take long to track it back centuries. In fact, it's been so influential we invented entirely new technology to make better...

The Actual History of Pink for Girls and Blue for Boys

It may feel like the idea of pink for girls and blue for boys has long been a part of our society. However, it wasn't that long ago that the lines were far from clear. In fact, the saying was even reversed in many areas! Not only that, but blue and pink weren't even common clothing colors for infants until the 1920s. So what did we use the colors for? And how did they end up being chosen? And w...

My parents were both children of Ukrainian immigrants and grew up during the great depression. I grew up in a very frugal family. I have never had large amounts of clothing. We bought good quality fabrics (usually natural fibers) and were not the least ashamed to mend what we had when necessary. If you took care of it you would have it for years so always went for very classic cuts. I am still for the most part living the same way. I own very little compared to most. Honestly I wouldn't know what to do with more.

I’d love to see this done with the pioneers’ wardrobes. I remember ma in the little house in the big woods book buying calico fabric when she went into town and then sitting with the aunts going through the Godey’s lady’s book and picking out a style of dress and sewing it at night. Laura always describes the patterns in the fabric of their dresses over and over again in different parts of the books and ma’s always seems to be a brown dress with leaves on it. I wonder how they made their own dresses without patterns or training. In a way we may never know simply because the clothing worn by the pioneers was worn out and then sewn into quilts and they into rags and rugs and few thought to record the clothing when writing journals or memoirs years later.

I wear a 5.5 flat shoe. If I want a heel, I need to start at a 5, and possibly go down. Except it’s already REALLY REALLY hard to find women’s shoes smaller than a 6 in stores. It’s why I liked Payless: they actually carried smaller women’s shoe sizes. I will sometimes get lucky at DSW, but I have to in prepared to be completely overwhelmed, not to mention I have to figure out how they have decided which shoes are “work” shoes, dressy shoes, sandals, sneakers, athletic shoes…I hate it.

When helping African refugees living in the US, one man insisted I let him take a certain long coat from the pile of donations. He proudly wore his pink puffy coat, and many of the other men liked pink items, too. Later, I asked some of the young women about it, and they found it hysterical that we made colors "boy" or "girl"!

When I was a teenager in the 80s they had color parties that were sort of like a pyramid scheme. I'm not sure exactly what they were trying to sell you but it was the rage. People would come up to you and tell you that that color was the wrong season for you.

My tactic: find a manufacturer, and the lasts Ishoe styles) within that manufacturer's line that fit, then buy them OR use them as exemplars and match them, measure for measure, feature for feature, with other manufacturer's shoes. For instance, I know that Munro oxfords and loafers fit me perfectly. I take my Munro loafers with me when I shop and compare it to another maker's shoes. It is immediately obvious when the lasts too wide, too narrow, too curved, the toe box isn't tall enough, etc., etc. Weird trick, but it works. Hope this helps!

If I recall correctly when Lily Langtry first arrived in London she only had one evening gown and it was in black and had been made by a French dressmaker in Jersey. As she only had the one dress and was on a strict budget she would alter it with lace etc. As she gained attention and wealthy lovers she continued to wear a black 🖤 evening gown to stand out.

So if I grossly oversimplify and extrapolate, these people, at the very least, went out to purchase clothing more infrequently than we did, and preserved their budgets for other costs, or saved up for a more expensive purchase. If somebody buys 2 formal silk dresses once a year, that is at most 2 trips. (Then again, this is in your quickfire articles section, specifically in the "poor" clergyman's daughter bit.) And even if I go over this single example to broaden the spectrum, as far as I see it, the focus was also less on the clothing one wears too. Before they laundered the outer parts, they had a hanful of outfits, mostly easily in categories of summer/winter, then categories of work, everyday and formal. The "trends" weren't quite as powerful as they are now. The incentive to buy was less.

Have you thought of making the gown with the back buttons as per history dictates and then sneeking in an invisible zip elsewhere, after all the zip need not be considered permanent, it can always be removed if you find someone to do up your back buttons.

very straight Achilles tendons mean that traditional heeled pumps AND dressy ballet flats will cut into my tendons in minutes. In my younger years my mother was a fan of payless shoes for fancy dress occasions (for reasons) but she never listened to me and I ALWAYS had bandaids on me Achilles and sometimes pools of blood in my heels. Now that I'm a grown up and buy my own shoes, I am firmly in the backless/sling back camp!! I'm also a big fan of the 100 steps test. Take 100 steps in the shoes. If there's the merest WHISPER of uncomfortableness, DO NOT BUY. I broke the tule once because the shoes were super cute and I regretted it the entire night.

Simple ..... It depends on how wealthy you were. A working class bride in the 1880's might have nothing while an upper class wealthy bride would have a full trousseau. My Grandmother was a professional designer and tailoress in the 1920's. Her books show 8-10 evening gowns per season for the Society clients ..... Mostly silks or fine lawns. She also listed clothing she made for herself or family and friends. As a middle class woman, she did have dance dresses but you definitely notice the simple day suits but often with two different skirts to one jacket. I remember looking in her wardrobe as a child ..... It was a 6' wide full wardrobe ..... It wasn't crammed full but she commented .... "I do have far too many clothes! And I currently have EIGHT hats!".

"'Twins, by Jupiter!' was all he said for a minute; then, turning to the women with an appealing look that was comically piteous, he added, 'Take 'em quick, somebody! I'm going to laugh, and I shall drop 'em.' John rescued his babies, and marched up and down, with one on each arm, as if already initiated into the mysteries of baby-tending, while Laurie laughed till the tears ran down his cheeks. 'It's the best joke of the season, isn't it? I wouldn't have you told, for I set my heart on surprising you, and I flatter myself I've done it,' said Jo, when she got her breath. 'I never was more staggered in my life. Isn't it fun? Are they boys? What are you going to name them? Let's have another look. Hold me up, Jo; for upon my life it's one too many for me,' returned Laurie, regarding the infants with the air of a big, benevolent Newfoundland looking at a pair of infantile kittens. 'Boy and girl. Aren't they beauties?' said the proud papa, beaming upon the little, red squirmers as if they were unfledged angels. 'Most remarkable children I ever saw. Which is which?' and Laurie bent like a well-sweep to examine the prodigies. 'Amy put a blue ribbon on the boy and a pink on the girl, French fashion, so you can always tell. Besides, one has blue eyes and one brown. Kiss them, Uncle Teddy,' said wicked Jo." - "Good Wives" by Louisa May Alcott

soooooo the answer is misogyny 😅 little girls need to be seen as innocent as long as possible because they're supposed to be things that are owned by men, that are then considered tarnished once they are touched by a "man who doesn't own them" (out of wedlock).

When I was a kid in the 1960s, my mom subscribed to McCall's magazine. Since I read every word that came into our house, I read them too. Every month Ms Chanel had a column that was mostly disjointed quotes and "rules for life". Even as a little kid, her writing felt shallow and more to promoting a lifestyle than offering good advice. My opinion is that Chanel was one of the early Influencers. She was selling herself and her lifestyle. So many middle and upper class women wanted the fictional life Chanel lived; they bought the perfume and suits and bags and shoes to pretend to live that life. Just like women do now. I never liked her No.5 perfume. I did like No.19 in the early 1980s, I don't like the modern version. I had never seen her quote about three types of Jews before, it's absolutely repulsive. Reminds me of an American boy who thought he was a Nazi and had a crush on me "I know you're Jewish, but I don't care. You're **special**." Ick.

Interesting with the jagged edges on flowers thing. In Swedish we call it Rosa. Derivative from rose. Which at first doesn’t make much sense. But roses are not necessarily red, they’re also pink. Nor is the word ‘rosa’ a Swedish word originally, but an ancient Greek word. We also call it ‘Skär’, from the French word for meat. Or ”Cerise” coming from the French word for cherries.

In the 19th century it was not unusual when a lady spent money on an dress good for several occasions she would have the seamstress use a heavy silk and make a skirt, a high necked bodice with long sleeves and an evening bodice with a low neck and short sleeves. That way she was always prepared for any formal occasion

Even in the first half of the 20th century people didn't have that many clothes. I had only a few school outfits, a Sunday dress, a party dress and some play clothes plus seasonal garments like coats, hats, boots and a swimsuit. The bedroom closets were about four feet wide. 80 years later even childrens clisets are crammed to the gills with clothes.

  • @elinat2414
    @elinat2414 3 дні тому

I think that overall, attitudes to and use of clothing are largely determined by your income, availablity of clothing and your interests. The mend and make do attitude was borne about by a lack of availability and money to purchase nice things, not because people were inherently more frugal and virtuous. The current fashion landscape allows people of all income levels to indulge the interest in fashion (often to he detriment of garment workers and the planet). The truth is, many people love fashion and/or are fashion-conscious. People in the past just had fewer options, because of the slower pace of fashion production. Therefore, in order to return to a more sustainable fashion landscape, the fashion industry itself would need to change to accommodate sustainability. It is unfair to put the burden of sustainability onto the consumers by idealising the past.
